E4E Statement on NY Governor Cuomo's Education Performance Grants

January 26, 2012

“Governor Cuomo’s new proposal for improving the current state of affairs in New York classrooms is a welcome change of course in what has otherwise been a sluggish process, only made worse by the unwillingness of the unions and local districts to meet in the middle on crucial issues such as teacher evaluations.  The Governor’s commitment to create $250 million in competitive performance grants is precisely the kind of action needed to jumpstart progress and ensure that the state is funding our education system in a way that supports teachers in the classroom and ultimately bolsters student achievement.  If teachers are to be held accountable for student performance and achievement, they need valuable feedback and support to help their students improve and succeed in the classroom.  These proposed grants will help to do just that and their positive impact will be felt by teachers far and wide throughout the state.”
